What is Blackjack?

The objective of Blackjack is clear: Beat the dealer’s hand total, but don’t exceed 21. Blackjack guides are a good place to start when you’re learning to play Blackjack. Remember, you’re competing against the dealer and not against other players. Even if there are 5 players at your table, it doesn’t matter how well they are performing. Focus on your hand and the dealer’s hand – that’s all you need to do.

Blackjack is one of the world’s most popular casino card games. Blackjack can be played in multiple formats, including a Single Hand or Multihand version of the game. Unlike poker, Blackjack is played against the dealer (the house), not against other players. The goal of Blackjack is simply to beat the dealer’s hand total without exceeding 21.

Players are dealt 2 cards face up. These are known as pocket cards or hole cards. The dealer is also dealt 2 cards, although only one of them is visible. Based on the cards the player is holding and the dealer’s upcard, decisions must be made. Players can hit, stand, double down, split, surrender, or take insurance. We will introduce you to all these options later on in our Blackjack guide!

How Do You Play Blackjack?

Play begins when you place your bets (after selecting your chip size) at the table.  There are rules in place designed to steer you towards a better understanding of the game and ultimately to enhance your enjoyment of classic Blackjack. The dealer shuffles the cards after every hand and deals 2 cards face up to each player at the table. Only one of the dealer’s cards is visible, the other is face down.

Your actions will be determined by two things: The cards you’re holding and the dealer’s card. It doesn’t matter what cards other players at your table are holding.  These include Hit (take another card), Stand (do nothing), Double (take one more card and double your bets), Split (split two identical cards), or take insurance if the dealer’s upcard is an Ace. Contrary to popular opinion, the goal is not to hit 21 – it’s simply to beat the dealer’s hand total without going bust.

Once you’ve determined the actions you will take, allow your hand to play out and hope for the best. Karamba advocates responsible gaming practices with all Blackjack games. This rollicking casino card game ranks highly with players, and for good reason. Blackjack is suave and sophisticated, yet fun at the same time. It’s a great game to play if you’re looking for a challenge, and there are multiple Blackjack games available at Karamba online casino.

What Are the Rules of Blackjack?

Blackjack is built on a framework of rules designed to guide you through your gameplay. These rules will vary from one game to the next, including things like Blackjack payouts, will the dealer draw to 16 and stand on all 17s (hard and soft)? What are the minimum and maximum bets? How many hands can you play simultaneously? Here’s what you should know…

Blackjack Etiquette

Basic table rules such as Blackjack etiquette apply to all land-based casinos. Unless otherwise indicated, players are not to touch the cards with their hands. Players go head-to-head against the dealer in pursuit of the highest value hand. Once cards have been dealt – from left to right – the Blackjack dealer will receive the final card. After the deal, the action will rotate from one player to the next. When it is your turn to act, you have several options available. You can hit or stand. Once everyone has had a chance to act, the dealer will reveal his/her hand.

What you should know about Blackjack:

    • The dealer is bound by rules as well. He or she may have to draw until 16 and be required to stand on all 17s. If the player’s hand and the dealer’s hand are equal in value, a push ensues. At this point, players will simply be refunded their bet.

    • If at any time you or the dealer exceeds 21, it’s game over. The strongest hand always scores in Blackjack.

    • Blackjack tables have set limits. There is a minimum bet and a maximum bet per game. Whether you’re a casual player, or a high roller, it’s important to pick a Blackjack table that caters to your bankroll requirements.

Blackjack Insurance

If the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, the player can opt for an insurance bet. This is to protect the player against the dealer having Blackjack (Ace + 10 value card). The insurance bet is placed over and above the initial bet.

Your decision to hit or stand is an important one in Blackjack. Remember any hand total of 11 could theoretically be a maximum of 21 if you draw a face card, or 10. As you get closer to 21, the likelihood of drawing a high-value card depends on how many of those cards remain in the deck.

Splitting Cards

Blackjack games also allow players to spit the cards. When you split a pair, you are effectively playing two hands. Sometimes you can re-split cards, others not. Many players choose not to split a pair that is worth 20, but all of them will split a pair of Aces since there is always a possibility of hitting Blackjack. When you double down, you will double your bet and take one final card. Blackjack games are also associated with many optional bets known as side bets. These bets may not always be available, and they vary from one table to the next.

What Are the Cards Worth in Blackjack?

Blackjack card values are easy to understand. The only card that causes a little confusion is the Ace since it can assume a value of 1 or 11. Cards 2 – 10 sport their nominal value (face value), while Jack, Queen, and King have a 10-value. The game is typically played with between 1 and 8 decks. These contain 52 cards per deck. A soft hand includes an Ace counted as 11, while a hard hand has an Ace counted as 1. A soft hand gets its name because the Ace can be 1 or 11, and a hard hand indicates that the Ace value is limited to just 1.

How Do You Deal Blackjack at Home?

Blackjack is a popular casino card game for friends and family at home. Home games are easy to set up. The first order of business is to shuffle the cards. Next, have one of the players at the table cut the cards in the deck. After the cards are placed in a shoe (card holder), the burn card (first card of the shoe) should be removed. Players should all be seated in a semicircle around the dealer, before bets are placed at the table.

The deal begins from the left of the dealer to the right of the dealer. 1 card is dealt to each player in turn face up, followed by one downcard to the dealer. On the second deal, another card is dealt face up to each player, followed by the dealer’s upcard.

Each of the players upcards must be visible to all other players at the table and the dealer. If an Ace is showing, the dealer must ask players if they wish to take insurance. Play starts with the player to the left of the dealer and continues around the table. Players have the option to hit, stand, double, split, or simply surrender their hands. Once all players have acted, the dealer will reveal the cards. If the dealer loses, the players will be paid out and the cards will be shuffled for a new game of Blackjack!
